A NORTH West doctor, who allegedly stole medicines belonging to the state, appeared in the Ganyesa magistrate's court yesterday.

Tshepo Maebana is accused of stealing the medicines and using them for commercial purposes.

The private doctor works at surgeries in Morokweng and Ganyesa and at the Taung District Hospital, where he allegedly stole the medicine. He was found in possession of medicines and tablets clearly labelled as government property.

Health and social development MEC Rebecca Kasienyane said: "It is suspected that this might very well be the work of a syndicate. If people in the department are involved, we will act swiftly in imposing the law. It is difficult at this stage to determine the value of the medication ."

The case was postponed to next week. - Nawhal Kara
