A strong nation-building partnership is driving the yearly early childhood development awards that are enhancing the campaign to nurture well-rounded future leaders.
These partners include SABC Education, the national Education Department, South African Congress for Early Childhood Development and the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, Sowetan, Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation and Absa Foundation.
Through the Absa and Sowetan ECD Awards we are encouraging and ensuring the professional development of ECD practitioners and the infrastructure development, improvement and support of ECD centres and ECD resources and training organisations.
They include caregivers, teachers and managers of ECD centres, crèches and kindergartens - as well as the tutors and organisations that nurture the teaching staff at the centres.
They are given awards for best resource and training organisations, home-based centre or playgroups, practitioners and community-based centres. An additional award recognising and acknowledging innovative ECD programmes has been introduced.
This project's other vital objectives include ensuring that the children are provided with havens of proper physical, emotional, psychological, academic and spiritual development.
We are also encouraging ECD practitioners and ECD centre managers to study further, acquire education and training, and receive accreditation from the education, health and social development departments with whom they could collaborate on inoculation drives and other community development projects.
Parents are also urged to support ECD by taking over the learning and teaching roles at home through playing with their children, reading to them or just giving the tiny tots a little bit of ego-boosting attention.
Most of the ECD community members who are touched by the ECD Awards spirit also end as members and affiliates of the highly influential SA Congress for ECD, which is a massive advocacy, lobbying and policy development network that is the backbone of the ECD Awards.
