The crash yesterday afternoon takes to 16 the number of people who have died on the province's roads since the weekend.
Police said yesterday's accident happened when a taxi travelling from Mtubatuba to Durban collided head-on with an oncoming truck at Mlalazi bridge near Mtunzini on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal.
"Apparently the tyre burst and the taxi collided head-on with a truck coming in the opposite direction," said Inspector Mbongeni Mdlalose.
"Six people, three females and three males, died on the scene, while 15 others were seriously injured.
"It is not clear how so many people could be involved in this accident, unless the taxi was overloaded.
"Of the 15, five were children," he said.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for transport, community safety and liaison Willies Mchunu yesterday again condemned those who break the rules and kill others on the roads.
Ten people lost their lives on provincial roads at the weekend.
Mchunu expressed his disappointment with those road users who do not obey the rules of the road and by so doing put the lives of other road users in danger.
"Despite numerous requests by the department of transport for people not to use bakkies as means of public transportation, people continue to ignore the call from the department, hence we experience accidents like the one that occurred in Amanzimtoti [at the weekend].
"I am warning all motorists that negligence will not be tolerated on our roads.
"All those who break the rules of the road will face the full might of the law," Mchunu said.
Meanwhile, the Eshowe crime prevention unit, acting on information about illegal firearms in the Ebomvu area outside Eshowe, arrested a 62-year-old man yesterday morning.
The man was found in possession of a homemade shotgun and several bags of dagga valued at about R5000.
The items were found hidden in his homestead.
It is believed that the man was selling the dagga.
The Eshowe SAPS is encouraging the community to come forward with information regarding illegal firearms and the selling of dagga in their area.
