'Pregnant girls need schooling'

EXCLUDING pregnant girls from attending school condemns them to poverty, the Department of Education has said.

EXCLUDING pregnant girls from attending school condemns them to poverty, the Department of Education has said.

Department spokesperson Granville Whittle said schools should provide an environment to allow pregnant schoolgirls to "stay at school for as long as possible and to return as soon as they are fit to do so".

Whittle said young mothers who were supported by their families, schools and communities to complete their schooling managed to have successful careers and avoided "multiple births".

"Those who don't finish school struggle for the rest of their lives," said Whittle.

He added that the department had committed itself to "help parents with the task of raising their girls and to assist to reduce teenage pregnancy".
