"In light of the current economic crisis we are facing, the proposal seems to be fair and acceptable to the needs of our workers," the Federation of Unions of SA (Fedusa) said yesterday.
The salary adjustments, which will be backdated to July 1, were 3percent more than what the employers had offered in August, an offer the unions rejected.
Good offer to accept
Fedusa general secretary Dennis George said: "As Fedusa, our one goal is to ensure that all our affiliates are treated fairly within the working arena and as such we have studied the Public Service Co-ordinating Bargaining Council proposal and feel that it is a good offer to accept."
George said the 11,5percent increase will be "highly beneficial" to the workers.
The National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union also welcomed the offer, saying it met the demands tabled to the employer, which included the application of a sliding scale to narrow the wage gap.
Workers to benefit
"We are confident that the revised offer of the employer takes us into a settlement range in accordance with our mandate of a double digit wage," the union said.
The Health and Other Service Personnel Trade Union of SA said the offer was reasonable, and was awaiting response from members. Other affiliated unions were not reached for comment. - Sapa
