South Africa's sculptors, painters, animators and graphic designers are being called on to submit their work for a major modern art exhibition in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg next year.

Spier Contemporary project manager Farzanah Badsha said yesterday artists were expected to produce works that symbolise the current mood and emotion of South African life.

"Ultimately the chosen pieces will be the ones that reflect some aspect of the South Africa's cultural state of mind in all of its guises and interpretations."

Badsha said the project was aimed at nurturing and promoting artists by exhibiting their work and holding a series of developmental projects in the country.

Every artist chosen for the exhibition will be paid an artist's recognition fee of R4000. The prize money for the six or seven winners will be shared from a R1,2million prize fund.

The closing date for submission is October 30 2009. - Sapa
