FIFTEEN pupils from the three schools that topped in the 2009 Blue IQ Smart Young Minds Challenge will be given additional prizes in Johannesburg today. They recently shared more than R100000.
Smart Young Mindz creates an awareness and interest in technical and commercial subjects among youth by encouraging high school students to investigate economic development, alternative and renewable energy generation and entrepreneurship challenges and to generate ideas for commercially viable products and or services.
This challenge is the biggest mathematics, science, technology, engineering and entrepreneurship studies and career development project for high schools in South Africa.
It is sponsored and organised by Gauteng's infrastructure and economic development arm, Blue IQ together with the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) and Sowetan and the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation.
Kathleen Butler, Amy Lochner, Estelle du Plooy, Pamela Cloete and Danica van der Waag of The Way Christian School won R7500 each, Chloe Melissa Fynn, Reshen Pillay, Kaviesh Gopal, Safeega Mohamed and Zainab Karolia of Willowmoore High School won R5000 each and Mohamed Areff, Muhammad Monga, Suhail Ismail, Himal Gangaram and Zaheer Adam of Roshnee Secondary School won R2500 each.
These bright and hardworking students also earned their schools R7500, R5000 and R2500 respectively.
Today, Blue IQ board chairman Neodine Isaacs-Mpulo and chief executive Lefatshe Technologies will present laptops to Butler, Lochner, Du Plooy, Cloete and Van der Waag, cellphones to Fynn, Pillay, Gopal, Mohamed and Karolia and digital cameras to Areff, Monga, Ismail, Gangaram and Adam.
