Mkhize to prove his knack again

YOUNG filmmaker Mfundo Mkhize, who is famous for writing and directing the award-winning The Ultimate Cola-Cola Goal advert, is at it again.

YOUNG filmmaker Mfundo Mkhize, who is famous for writing and directing the award-winning The Ultimate Cola-Cola Goal advert, is at it again.

This time he has penned and is directing a movie, the central theme of which is the coming 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup.

Simply called 2010, the 12-minute short will be shot on location in Soweto from September 12 to September 16.

"Everybody is looking up to the great 'messiah' called 2010 and how their lives are going to change for the better, instead of looking at now and be realistic and work hard to achieve what they want," Mkhize said.

"This is a story I crafted looking at my environment and I use 2010 to tell an ordinary story.

"Actually 2010 is the concept of time, which is actually 8.10pm. This shows the illusion of some people about what 2010 represents and how it is going to change their lives.

"This is represented by the main character Manqoba's illusion that he got from a sangoma about how he will play for Bafana Bafana come 2010," said Thabo Welcome, producer of the film.

The film tells the gripping story of Manqoba, a young soccer player whose vision is to play in the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

His dreams are shattered when he gets himself into trouble with a loan shark who threatens to kill his pregnant girlfriend, Thando.

He has to choose between his dreams and his family.

The film will be premiered at among other places the annual AFDA Film Festival at Cinema Nouveau in Rosebank, Johannesburg, and Cavendish Square.
