THE fight between Ali "Rush Hour" Funeka and Joan "Sycuan Warrior" Guzman for the vacant IBF lightweight title is still on, contrary to reports.

Mzimase Mnguni, the manager who co-promotes Funeka with Gary Shaw and Cedric Kushner, told Sowetan yesterday that he "wonders where people get misleading information from because we are still within the IBF's order of negotiating, and the deadline is tomorrow".

Mnguni said Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions proposed to stage the fight on November 28 in Canada but their offer of around R500000 was turned down by Funeka's camp.

Funeka earned about R1,7million for the IBF and WBO title fight against Nate Campbell in February. He is rated third while Guzman is a spot below Funeka.

The IBF number one and two positions are vacant. The IBF advised their camps on August 4 to begin negotiating. If they fail to reach an agreement today the IBF will call for a purse bid because neither camp has automatic rights to stage this vacant title fight.
