ARCHBISHOP Bob Mahlaola, 61, appeared in the Hammanskraal magistrate's court yesterday charged with the rape of a 10-year-old relative and her 13-year-old friend.

Mahlaola fled Seabe village in Mpumalanga on Sunday as the angry community and police intensified their search for him following the alleged rapes. He gave himself up on Tuesday.

Police at Mamehlake said Mahlaola was remanded until next week when he will try to apply for bail.

Mahlaola's wife Julia has abandoned their house, fearing for her life. Speaking from a secret hide-out, she told Sowetan she had opened a case of rape against her husband.

The pastor has been divorced nine times. Police are also investigating the possibility that he may have been involved in similar incidents which were resolved between family members.
