Baby born on the street

A WOMAN gave birth to a healthy baby boy on a pavement in Durban yesterday, paramedics said.

A WOMAN gave birth to a healthy baby boy on a pavement in Durban yesterday, paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said the birth took place at noon on the corner of Umbilo and Canada roads.

"Paramedics arrived on the scene and found the mother and baby already covered with blanket provided by members of the public to protect them from the scorching heat.

"The mother was stabilised and the boy examined before they were taken to hospital.

"The woman, who is believed to be from the Democratic Republic of Congo, was at full term when her water broke before she could reach the local hospital," Banks said.

He said the woman' s child was reportedly her first born. Both mother and baby were declared healthy in hospital - Sapa
