Eldos fail to pitch at racism inquiry

ELDORONIANS Rugby Club failed to show up at a special inquiry into claims of racism against the predominantly white Wanderers Rugby Club because they felt their complaints would not be taken seriously.

ELDORONIANS Rugby Club failed to show up at a special inquiry into claims of racism against the predominantly white Wanderers Rugby Club because they felt their complaints would not be taken seriously.

The two clubs are affiliated to the Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU). The Eldorado Park side was supposed to give evidence against Wanderers at a special inquiry on Tuesday in Johannesburg.

They claim the anti-racism committee they were to appear before is the same body that threw out their first racism complaint on August 5.

According to the Golden Lions referees' report there was no racial abuse from Wanderers and the case was thrown out.

The case is a sequel to the league game between the two sides on August 1 when K-word was allegedly used by a Wanderers player at Eldoronians player JP Luyt.

At the same time, Luyt was allegedly punched in the face by the same player and had to receive stitches.

These are not the first claims of racism by union affiliates. The Soweto Rugby Club cut ties with the GLRU, claiming that it had failed to take complaints about racism seriously.

But the Soweto side has since re-affiliated after a new management took over.

Eldos chairperson Reynald Isaacs told Sowetan that they disregarded Tuesday's inquiry because they were unhappy with how the union initially dealt with this matter.

"Our stance is that an independent committee be established to investigate racism in its totality, only then will we provide our full cooperation. As a result, we intend to write a missive to the Gauteng MEC for sport (Nelisiwe Mbatha-Mthimkulu) to intervene in this case," Isaacs said.

A statement from the Lions' anti-racism committee says Tuesday's inquiry was not finalised because the Eldoronians did not attend.
