Ndavhe Ramakuela, Polokwane's World Cup boss, said the renovations are aimed at bringing the stadium in line with Fifa requirements, because it will be used as a training venue. The Peter Mokaba Sports Complex, which is still being built, will host World Cup matches.
"No sporting activities will take place at the stadium between September 2009 and March 2010.
"The Polokwane municipality decided on this period for renovations for climatic reasons as summer will be more favourable for the pitch and construction work," Ramakuela said yesterday.
"The bulk of the work will be done on the dressing rooms, referees' rooms, the athletics track and the installation of a new drug-testing facility.
"The stadium has of late been certified as having one of the pitches which is in pristine condition. However, proper drainage systems will be put in place."
