POLITICAL life does not confer automatic immunity on itspractitioners.

African National Congress Youth League president Julius Malema's vow not to apologise if found guilty of gender insensitivity is appalling. He is not above the law.

Malema has been hauled to court by the Sonke Gender Justice Network to answer to charges of hate speech and harassment. Malema had said that President Jacob Zuma's rape accuser had "a nice time".

South Africa is plagued by a high crime rate, with many women having been raped in the past few years.

An astute politician will know that to please his constituency he has to reflect their joys, aspirations and prejudices.

Malema forgets that they had put him in his exalted seat and they can easily tip him out of it come the next election. He is a reckless populist, who panders to the lowest common majority to gain applause.

His disrespect for the law and other institutions of the land is a serious sign that he is not fit to lead. He is a dangerous man and it is a grave indictment of the ANC leadership that they have failed to rein him in.

Unless the ANC distances itself and sets the record straight, it will be perceived as condoning this trashing of the judicial system.

Society needs its institutions to function well and to maintain balance.

Someone, preferably the ANC leaders, will have to take Malema's education in hand lest his behaviour sows the seeds of disorder in our land.
