MORE than 16000 jobs have been created in Limpopo this year.
Premier Cassel Mathale said the province had by July 1 this year created 16 201 jobs in agriculture, mining, tourism and through the Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP).
Mathale said 15368 jobs were created in the EPWP, 120 in the revitalisation of the small irrigation scheme, 667 in environmental management and 36 in filling up vacant posts in the provincial government departments.
He said the figures did not include the contribution made in local municipalities in the five districts of , Mopani, Waterberg, Sekhukhune, Capricorn and Vhembe.
Mathale said more jobs were billed to be created in the coming months by committing more resources to capital infrastructure projects that include the connection of pipelines from available water sources to needy communities, speeding up of electrification of houses and the construction of more roads and sewerage systems.
He said most of the projects would be labour intensive to get more local people working in order to boost the province's economy and that of the country.
"Our projects will provide opportunities to local unemployed people, women, youth and disabled people, depending on the skills available at local level," Mathale said.
He said his government was aiming at prioritising the construction of schools, especially in the rural areas to address the shortage of classrooms.
He said about 127 schools which were damaged by storms still needed to be rebuilt so that no child attends classes in dilapidated building or shacks.
"By the end of the year, our province shall have created much needed jobs to meet the demand of the government and our people," Mthale said.
The new statistics put the province right on track in terms of meeting President Jacob Zuma's promised target of 500000 jobs before the end of the year.
Of the nine provinces, Limpopo was expected to create not less than 13percent job opportunities before the end of the year.
