AS THE Women's Month came to an end, Limpopo women dominated the 2009 Govan Mbeki Housing Awards at a glittering ceremony.
The event was held at the Meropa Entertainment Casino outside Polokwane at the weekend.
The merits awards were first introduced three years ago to celebrate the legacy of struggle icon Govan Mbeki and to motivate stakeholders in the housing industry.
Participants contested for the local municipality of the year, youth builder of the year, woman builder of the year, subsidy builder of the year, historically disadvantaged builder of the year and non-subsidy builder of the year categories.
Winners will proceed to compete in the national competition later this year.
The event was organised by the provincial department of local government and housing in conjunction with the national home builders registration council and the SABC.
Three women stood head and shoulders above the rest, taking major honours in the contractor of the year, historically disadvantaged builder of the year and affordable housing developer of the year categories.
Edith Mongoedi of Mongoedi Products and Projects emerged as the 2009 contractor of the year, a feat she also achieved last year.
Since she cut her teeth in this industry, Mongoedi has created more than 160 employment opportunities.
The awards for affordable housing developer and historically disadvantaged builders of the year went to Naletsana Mangena of Phuthego Projects and Charmaine Molokomme of Crust Business Enterprise, respectively.
For their sterling achievements, they were each presented with R15000 cheques.
"It takes hard work and dedication from builders for a construction company to achieve this feat.
"Our motto at Mongoedi Products and Projects has been hard work and determination," said Mongoedi.
Meanwhile, MEC for Local Government and Housing, Soviet Lekganyane, said his department was going to crack the whip on constructors who fail to complete their projects.
