THE police have launched a manhunt for the suspects who killed a man and raped his companion.

Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said the police received a report about a rape on the footpath in Peace Valley, Plessislaer, outside Pietermaritzburg on Sunday.

"On arrival at the scene the police found a 47-year-old woman who told the police that she had been raped," Budhram said.

He said investigations at the scene led police to the body of an adult male. The body, which had a stab wound to the chest, was identified as that of Bonginkosi Dlamini, 54.

Budhram said the man and the woman were walking along the footpath to their house after visiting a local tavern when they were attacked.

"It is believed that a quarrel ensued between the deceased and the suspects.

This resulted in one of the suspects stabbing and fatally wounding him.

The men then attacked the woman and allegedly raped her before fleeing from the scene on foot.

The police are appealing to anyone with information to contact Detective-Captain Miccah Makanya of the SAPS at the Plessislaer Detective Services.

Miccah's office phone number is 033-398-9755 and his cellphone number is 082-567-0124.
