Marvellous marriage of poetry and visual arts

I HAVE known him for some time as a poet charting a new path for the spoken word in Johannesburg, creating platforms for poetry that is sexy and popular with Jozi's youth.

I HAVE known him for some time as a poet charting a new path for the spoken word in Johannesburg, creating platforms for poetry that is sexy and popular with Jozi's youth.

But now The Prophet JD, pictured , seems to be on his way to conquering new territory . He is invading quiet visual art spaces with his new brand of poetry, which he calls visual poetry.

The Right on the Rim project saloon at the Arts on Main on the corner of Fox Street and Berea Road is at present hosting the Soweto poet.

The show started yesterday and ends on Friday.

The Prophet JD was inspired by a photo collage, called In my Moments, that was on exhibition. The digital print was produced by Austrian artist Walter Stach while he was in residence at Right on the Rim in June.

The Prophet JD performs his poems and the audience decides which of the poems they like best. These poems will then become part of the collage. He will also present a recently produced text collage inspired by the Venice Biennale 2009.

This unusual collaboration developed when the poet from Soweto met the Austrian photo artist at the Right on the Rim project in June.

For Stach The Prophet JD was a contact with the "real" South Africa he had always longed for. In return Stach was the ideal opportunity for The Prophet JD to get novel ideas from another, unknown world.

People who would like to see a completely different collaboration, a marriage of poetry and visual art, should make a point of checking out The Prophet JD any day this week at the Arts on Main.

I promise you, it will be worth it.
