Police fired teargas and stun grenades for the first time since the violent demonstrations erupted about two monthsago in the western Jewish part of the Holy City.
The latest clashes flared after a Jerusalem court ruling to keep in custody 16 ultra-Orthodox men detained on Saturday during demonstrations against the opening of a parking lot during the Jewish holy day of rest.
Following the decision, loudspeakers in ultra-Orthodox religious neighbourhoods of the city called on protesters to come out into the streets.
Several hundred protesters also surrounded a hotel in a religious neighbourhood where an ultra-Orthodox man had been stabbed to death on Sunday over a financial dispute.
The demonstrators tried to stop police removing the body for a possible autopsy, a procedure prohibited in ultra-Orthodox circles.
The protests first erupted 10 weeks ago after a decision by secular mayor Nir Barkat to open a car park under the city hall on the Sabbath, the Jewish holy day of rest that runs from Friday sunset to Saturday sunset.
The city council says opening the car park in the popular tourist and shopping district is essential for the city's economic development. - Sapa-AFP
