BAFANA Bafana suffered a major blow yesterday when midfield ace Teko "General" Modise was forced to withdraw from the squad because of a groin injury.

As a result, Katlego Mashego is on standby to join Bafana Bafana in Europe on condition he is granted a Schengen visa by the German embassy. Safa will apply for the visa on Mashego's behalf today.

Mashego received his call-up letter from Safa late yesterday as a replacement for his Orlando Pirates teammate.

He will join Bafana Bafana in Europe for the two international friendlies against Germany and Ireland on September 5 and 8 respectively.

"I have been informed that Teko is out due to an injury. The coaches have roped in Katlego as his replacement," said Sipho Nkumane, the Bafana Bafana manager.

The injury has come as a blessing in disguise for Modise, who needs a breather to recharge his batteries after a hectic 2008-2009 season for both Bafana Bafana and Pirates.

That might have contributed to his low-key performance in the Confederations Cup, during which many people predicted he would secure himself a lucrative overseas contract. Modise was declared unfit to travel with Bafana to Europe after being injured in a game against Cosmos on Saturday.

The withdrawal comes a day after Clifford "Robot" Ngobeni and Lance Davids were roped in to replace the injured MacBeth Sibaya and Bryce Moon. Davids could not be reached for comment but Ngobeni is over the moon at having been recalled.

Ngobeni, who has been mentored by former Senaoane Gunners chairperson Mike "Nanana" Ntombela, has featured once for Bafana Bafana, in the 2007 1-1 drawn friendly against Swaziland in Germiston, where he deservedly won the man of the match award.

"I'm happy to have been recalled after sustaining an injury after the Swaziland game," Ngobeni said.
