This period is so vital that the success of a nation depends on the success of a country's early childhood development (ECD) programme.
A proper system of ECD uses an integrated approach to a child's development, considers a child's health, nutrition, education, psychosocial factors as well as additional environmental factors in the family and community.
It is estimated that between birth and six years a child will acquire 50 to 80percent of its intellectual capacity.
A vibrant and viable ECD philosophy, practice and culture requires a solid foundation for life-long learning, which thrives as a joint effort between parents, the community and government.
To help make this worthwhile group effort, South Africans are invited to vote for the best early childhood development practitioners through the Absa and Sowetan ECD Awards, with the champions due to be honoured in Gauteng in December.
These awards, which are run in partnership with SABC Education, the national Education Department, Department of Social Development, South African Congress for Early Childhood Development and the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund.
The partnership enhances professionalism of caregivers, teachers and managers of ECD centres, crèches and kindergartens and the institution's infrastructure and academic development.
The awards are given for the best ECD practitioner, home-based care centre; community-based care centre and best resource and training organisation.
A new additional award is to be given for illustrious innovation in ECD practices and-or programmes. Entries can be posted to SABC Education Outreach, Private Bag X 345, Mellville, 2109.
