usuthu go down to gutsy chiefs

KAIZER Chiefs registered their first win of the season when they beat AmaZulu 3-2 in an exciting Absa Premiership match at Chatsworth Stadium yesterday.

Playing at home, AmaZulu were more dominant in the first 10 minutes as they piled on the pressure but failed to find the back of the net.

Sandile Gumede scored in the fourth minute only but to be adjudged off-side by referee Jerome Damon.

Four minutes later Amakhosi goalie Arthur Bartman was forced to parry Sthembiso Dlamini's effort for a corner.

On the 11th minute Siphiwe Tshabalala's solo run on the left flank was easily dealt with by Kalililo Kakonje.

The first goal came in the 26th minute when Pere Ariwerayai was adjudged to have fouled Nkosinathi Nhleko and Tshabalala stepped up to convert from the penalty spot.

Two minutes later Tshabalala played a long ball to Nhleko who controlled cleverly with his chest and delivered a classic goal to beat Kakonje.

Usuthu pulled one back two minutes later when Kampamba Chintu connected well with a free kick taken by Dlamini and flicked the ball to easily beat Bartman. Nhleko was injured three minutes from the break and replaced by José Torrealba.

In the second half Ariwerayai failed to convert the easiest scoring chance in the 53rd minute. But David Mathebula caught the Usuthu defence off-guard with a beautiful strike from inside the box to make it 3-1.

Neil Tovey pulled out Dumisani Ngwenya and Nhlanhla Zwane for Ayanda Dlamini and Litha Ngxabi, while Chiefs brought on Abia Nale and Knowledge Musona for for Arthur Zwane and Tshabalala.

Ayanda Dlamini reduced the deficit to 3-2 when he finished off a beautiful cross from Gumede.

l It was also a good afternoon for Moroka Swallows' fans as the Birds flew with their first win of the season when they pipped Free State Stars 1-0 at Goble Park Stadium, courtesy of substitute Siyabonga Nomvethe in the 74th minute.
