A WOMAN and a man were arrested yesterday when they were allegedly found in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition in Alexandra, Johannesburg police said.

Alexandra police were patrolling the East Bank area of the township when they spotted a car and tried to stop it, Inspector Moses Maphakela said.

One person jumped out of the moving vehicle before police stopped it.

When the vehicle was searched, an AK-47, R-5 rifle and pistol, along with 51 rounds of ammunition and a magazine for the AK-47 were found.

The woman, 25, and the man, 38, who were still in the car were arrested and charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

They are expected to appear in the Alexandra magistrate's court, formerly known as the Wynberg magistrate's court. - Sapa
