TAXI operators will meet today to discuss issues around the launch of the Bus Rapid Transport system, the SA National Taxi Council has said .

The meeting will follow on from the court judgment handed down on Friday dismissing an urgent interdict by Santaco to stop the implementation of the BRT system in Johannesburg, the council said on Saturday.

The council said it continued to "promote constructive consultation and engagement".

The taxi industry initially planned a strike to object to the BRT system, which will be launched in Johannesburg next Sunday and will start operating on Monday.

But Santaco later said this would not take place.

Taxi operators have expressed concern about the government asking it to register their routes and then placing the new bus system on the same routes without consulting them.

Earlier on Saturday taxi industry representatives met with the South African National Civic Organisation to air their issues about the BRT system.

Sanco spokesperson Dumisani Mthalane said during the meeting it emerged that taxi representatives were not opposed to the system itself.

On Friday it was announced that an interim company termed a "special purpose vehicle" had been appointed to operate the buses until negotiations with the taxi industry were finalised.

The interim chief executive of the SPV, Jackie Huntley would oversee the rollout of the bus services over the next six months.
