'Semenya needs our protection'

THE South African Women and Sport Foundation and soccer boss Kaizer Motaung have added their voices to the growing chorus on the IAAF's public humiliation of 800m sensation Caster Semenya.

THE South African Women and Sport Foundation and soccer boss Kaizer Motaung have added their voices to the growing chorus on the IAAF's public humiliation of 800m sensation Caster Semenya.

The foundation's acting chairperson Ntambi Ravele said they were disappointed by the behaviour of the world athletics governing body's gender verification tests on Semenya.

The foundation has also urged to name the athletes or people who complained about Semenya's gender for the sake of transparency.

Motaung said: "It was shocking for certain sections of our communities to be hypocrites that sent messages to the IAAF recommending that their own athlete be humiliated by gender tests at a time when she had been registered as a female athlete and possibly gone through the preliminary heats before she scooped the gold medal.

"Semenya deserves the protection of all and so do many other athletes that represent our country in sporting disciplines wherein whites seemed to rule the roost even long after our incorporation into world sporting events."

Ravele added: "They [IAAF] have humiliated Caster beyond belief. This is a medical issue that should have been handled in private and a report given to those that challenged it and the athlete.

"It is taking us 10 years back whereby we challenged the Supreme Council for Sport in Africa and IOC on its plans to conduct gender verification tests at the 1999 All Africa Games.

"Their plans were subsequently cancelled and no compulsory tests were done.

"What is strange is that throughout the championship in Germany there were many women with male-like physiques, however, we are not hearing anything about them."
