Sowetan has learnt from various influential soccer bosses that the highly respected Motaung has already been approached. This comes in the wake of a Safa constitution which prohibits the president from holding any other executive position within the association.
With incumbent Molefi Oliphant having made it clear he will not stand for re-election, Khoza has been lobbied to stand for the position of Safa president. On the other hand, the Transformation Football Forum has endorsed Danny Jordaan as their preferred candidate for the same position along with Kirsten Nematandani.
Safa auditors are currently verifying the nominations, which will be forwarded to chief executive Raymond Hack next week.
Nominations closed last week.
The PSL board and its executive will meet next month where a decision on who will replace Khoza is expected to be discussed should he be elected the new Safa president.
Motaung could not be reached for comment.
"We have agreed that Madala (Motaung) should be our new chairperson when Dr Khoza goes to Safa as president on September 26," said one top soccer club owner.
"Madala and Dr Khoza have been working very close as chairpersons of finance and the league respectively, especially around sponsorship deals.
"We want continuity, that is why Madala will be our new chairperson after the Safa elections."
While the Khoza group has been keeping a low profile during their campaign, the forum has been vocal about various issues in soccer. The forum is led by Chief Mwelo Nonkonyane, who is also Safa deputy president.
Its leaders include Mandla Mazibuko, Steve Pila and Abel Rakoma.
Certain soccer officials have, however, asked Oliphant to stay on until 2012, arguing that Safa elections might disrupt the 2010 World Cup preparations.
