IN A country as homophobic as ours it is not surprising that once in a while we will get some idiots pontificating about the ills of same-sex love.

IN A country as homophobic as ours it is not surprising that once in a while we will get some idiots pontificating about the ills of same-sex love.

It is scary, however, when such rantings come from an attorney who represents an outfit that calls itself the Society for the Protection of Our Constitution.

This is exactly what happened when Zahir Omar made a submission to the Judicial Service Commission, saying Judge Kathy Satchwell should not be considered for the Constitutional Court bench because she is lesbian.

Surely someone who claims to be for "the protection of our constitution" would know what that document says about discriminating against people solely on the grounds of sexual orientation.

There might very well be good reasons why Satchwell should not be made a Constitutional Court judge but such a decision should not be based on who she has decided to fall in love with.
