"It was bound to happen because we have been working hard on polishing our finishing at training," said three-goal hero Thulasizwe Mbuyane.

"The win tonight (Saturday) is not about me, we achieved the feat as a collective. We have been creating a lot of opportunities but the problem has been failure to convert them.

"As players, we know that we have raised the hopes of many people with this win. It's still early in the season but we have a very good chance of challenging for the championship and other silverware on offer this season."

Pirates' coach Ruud Krol said: "We have been creating many scoring opportunities, but the problem is that we forgot to score.

"I spoke to the players at interval, saying we need to convert our chances. I'm happy that we were able to score more goals tonight."

His counterpart at Cosmos, Jomo Sono - himself a product of Pirates - said his former club deserved to win the match that was played at Orlando Stadium.

"Our boys were a bit nervous, everything did not go well for us. We were totally outclassed. It should have been six to seven goals."

Mbuyane opened the floodgates in the 12th minute, and grabbed his second and third in the 50th and 61st minutes. Thembinkosi "Terror" Fanteni got the fourth in the 87th minute.
