AFTER searching for a recording deal for years, maskandi group Abafana Baka Dladla finally got a breakthrough.
Hailing from Weenen in KwaZulu-Natal, Abafana Baka Dladla is one of the most promising maskandi music groups around.
Known as Izinyosi in the music industry, the group has just released a debut album called Umsila Wenja.
Made up of seven members, the group's maskandi sound can be classified as ushameni. They sing about social issues and about love. The album also has a gospel track.
The founder of the group, Stanley Dladla, says the music is composed jointly.
"Most of the songs in the album talk about things that people can relate to.
"Our music usually warns people and brings awareness about issues that people do not take seriously," he says.
To produce this amazing album, the group sought help from award-winning maskandi singer Thokozani Langa.
"We brought in Thokozani Langa because we wanted our album to sound professional," Dladla explains.
He says Abafana Baka Dladla has been looking for a recording company since 2004, but had had no success. Doors were shut in their faces all the time.
"We realised that we were not going to get a break unless we establish our own company," Dladla says.
He says before they started singing, the group specialised in African traditional dance.
Then in 2003, they decided to venture into both dancing and singing.
