KWAZULU-NATAL suffered a high number of deaths on its roads, with 14 people dying in separate accidents over the weekend.
Seven others were critically injured.
Thirteen people died in the early hours on Friday when a taxi travelling from Empangeni to Nseleni collided head-on with a truck coming from Mtubatuba.
It is alleged that the taxi was travelling in the wrong lane towards oncoming traffic when the accident happened.
Seven passengers died on the scene. The truck driver escaped unharmed.
Meanwhile, four people travelling in a BMW died on the MR166 road in the Ngwelezane township bypass in Empangeni.
The BMW was travelling towards Empangeni and was overtaking another vehicle when it collided head-on with an bus travelling towards Ngwelezane. There were no passengers on the bus.
Another horrific accident, this time on the Umbumbulu road, left one passenger dead and four injured when a bakkie and a light vehicle collided head-on.
A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run accident on the N2 north bound between spaghetti junction and the M19 in Durban, .
A 40-year-old man died when his luxury BMW overturned on the N2 North near Ballito and rolled several times.
An accident on the R61 towards Port Edward on the South Coast left six people injured when the driver of a bakkie lost control of his vehicle and veered down an embankment.
Provincial MEC for transport, community safety and liaison Willies Mchunu has sent his condolences to the families their loved ones who perished on the roads.
He said he was convinced that all these accidents on the roads were avoidable.
"It pains me when our people lose their lives as a result of these accidents," Mchunu said.
"Motorists must at all times observe the rules of the road. No dangerous overtaking and speeding.
"Our law enforcement agencies will continue to deal with errant drivers."
