IN KwaZulu-Natal four people were killed this week when a taxi they were travelling in crashed.

The vehicle was later found to be un-roadworthy.

Provincial MEC for transport Willies Mchunu said police officers were constantly on the lookout for un-roadworthy vehicles to get them immediately taken off the road.

"The owners of these taxis not only pose a risk to their passengers but to other road users as well."

He said taxi operators who chose to ignore traffic safety laws would be dealt with "very harshly".

A large number of taxis had already been impounded as part of his department's campaign to decrease carnage on the roads, he said. - Sne Masuku
