COP GOES MISSING

LIMPOPO police have sought the services of a specialised police unit from Pretoria to assist in the search for a missing police officer.

LIMPOPO police have sought the services of a specialised police unit from Pretoria to assist in the search for a missing police officer.

Inspector Solomon Mabitsela, 44, of Mankweng in Turfloop, went missing while on duty on Monday.

He went missing in the mountains at Mafefe outside Lebowakgomo when he and his colleagues were investigating a case of illegal mining in the area.

Limpopo police spokesperson Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba said the team from Pretoria would assist members of the dog unit who had been searching for Mabitsela since Monday.

Mabitsela and other police officers went to the mountain at Mafefe after they had received a tip-off about an illegal mining operation and decided to go and investigate.

Mabitsela was attached to Lebowakgomo police station.

"We do not know what happened to the officer while they were in the mountain because the last time he was seen was when he was coming down from the mountain with other cops," Ramatseba said.

It was suspected that Mabitsela might have slipped and fallen among the rocks.

Meanwhile, some members of the community suspect Mabitsela might have been kidnapped by theillegal miners.

Ramatseba said they were using whatever method they had, including a police chopper, to access the mountain in their search.

He appealed to members of the community in the area who might have information that will assist in finding Mabitsela to contact a local police station or call the police's crime stop number 08600 10111.
