This was one of the resolutions passed at the Multi-Sectorial Conference on Decent Work Towards and Beyond 2010 yesterday.
The conference, held at the Protea Hotel in Johannesburg, was organised by Building and Wood Workers' International (BWI). BWI is a global union federation formed by democratic unions with members in the building, wood forestry and allied sectors.
Cosatu, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the Building and Construction Allied Workers Union attended the conference.
"Of the 900000 employed by the construction sector, 32percent work in the informal sector," said NUM's construction coordinator Isaac Ntshangase.
"In 2007, statistics also revealed that almost 70percent of the workers were earning less than R2500 a month," he said.
The conference agreed among others:
l lobby Fifa and Olympic games committees to ensure that they commit to the principles of decent work;
l to call for the banning of labour brokers and the variation of labour standards in subcontracting arrangements; and
l to campaign for a living wage and the strengthening of the decent work campaign in all sectors beyond 2010.
