WE KNOW them more as stage performers - but for Loyiso Bala, Louise Carver, Carl Beukes and Jamali it was an opportunity to display their skills as jewellery designers at a glittering function in Rosebank, Johannesburg, on Tuesday night.

The AngloGold AuDITIONS jewellery competition invited the celebrities to add to the 2009/10 Urban Tribes collection.

"With the exception of Louise, none of them has jewellery design experience. We are impressed with the results," said Mark Pool, marketing manager of AngloGold Ashanti.

Celebs designed signature pieces that reflected flamboyant Urban Tribes characters that were conceptualised by Dion Chang.

Jamali's trio of Liesl, Jacqui and Mariechan got down with the Gold Digger theme and designed the Golden Rose, which is intended to be draped across a bootyluscious bottom, around the waist or neck.

Inspired by the Hip-Hop Homeboy theme Loyiso designed a gold power-neckpiece with some real Africa zing. Bala said: "My design, Egoli, is a piece of Africa of who I am."

"I'm very chuffed with my piece," said Louise, who selected the Old Money Honey theme.

Carls' piece, called Florrior, was inspired by The Futurist theme. His bracelet has leaves that transform into lethal blades.

Professional designers and gold manufacturers teamed up with the celebs to bring their pieces to life. The four pieces weigh in at 1689g of white, rose and 18 carat gold, which has a commercial value of R971860.

The celeb pieces are not eligible for entry into the competition but they will form part of the 26-piece AuDITIONS Urban Tribes gold collection, which will be presented with 22 finalists' pieces. The winners will be announced in October.
