VISITING Swiss muso Andreas Vollenweider says he has a lot in common with South Africans.
Vollenweider is due to perform at the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz festival on tomorrow and on Saturday.
The multi-instrumentalist, who is increasingly known for playing the harp in addition to a number of wind instruments he has mastered, says he has the same social values and political philosophy as South Africans.
Speaking to Sowetan yesterday at a top hotel in Rosebank after he landed in the country, he revealed that the had been looking for a particular instrument for years.
"I have eventually found an instrument that has become mine - and that is the harp. I like it because of its authenticity as an ethnic instrument. Ours is genuine love.
"Love is extending something, often from yourself to someone, and in return they give back to you," Vollenweider said.
He also said South Africans had embraced his sounds, particularly during the struggle, because of the common thread that runs through his music.
Vollenweider will perform on the Mbira Stage on Friday at 11pm and on Saturday at 11.15pm.
