Thieves hit school for R200000

THE Limpopo department of education says it is losing the battle against criminals after another burglary left a school without 21 computers.

The alleged burglary happened at Mmushi Primary School in Kgomo village on Monday morning, when the 21 computers worth more than R200000 were stolen.

This school has produced, among others, Judge President of the Transvaal Division of the High Court Bernard Ngoepe and former Limpopo health department spokesperson Phuti Seloba, who was responsible for securing the computers.

Over the past few months the department has opened new state-of-the-art schools in a bid to bridge the technological divide in public schools.

But its endeavours to empower schools with modern equipment have been hindered by thieves who struck at a number of schools in the province.

Spokesperson Ndo Mangala was incensed and accused schools' management and the police of failing to provide adequate security at their schools.

Mangala said the police had never apprehended anyone in any of the reported crimes. He said it was not the responsibility of the provincial education department to ensure the security of school property.

GaMatlala police spokesperson Captain Nelson Mailula said yesterday they were investigating and hoped to make arrests soon.
