Real not yet a cohesive force

MADRID - Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini admitted this week that managing all of the Spanish giants' new stars "will not be easy" this season.

MADRID - Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini admitted this week that managing all of the Spanish giants' new stars "will not be easy" this season.

"That will be the big challenge of this project. Many were top players at their club, it will not be easy," sports daily Marca quoted him as saying.

"They are all internationals but they have to understand that they can't always play. the player is always selfish.

"All players want to play all the time.

"My goal will be to achieve the commitment of all, to involve all the players individually so we can reach collective objectives," he said.

Real president Florentino Perez has splashed out more than ß250million (R2,8billion) on the likes of Kaka, Xabi Alonso, Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema since he returned to the club in June in a bid to make the nine-time European champions a formidable force again.

Perez led Real from 2000 to 2006, when they earned the nickname "Los Galacticos", with such stars as Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo and David Beckham.

But while the club enjoyed the success of two domestic league titles and one Champions League title, between 2003 and 2006 it did not win a single major trophy, and fears have been expressed that its glamorous new stars may also fail to deliver this season. - Sapa-AFP
