THERE were no guidelines and no proper consultation during the eThekwini municipality's street renaming process, the Durban high court heard yesterday .

The DA and IFP have asked the court to overturn Durban's new street names.

They argue that proper processes were not followed in renaming the streets, saying that the municipality, which is led by the ANC, excluded and subordinated the public in the pursuance of its own political objectives.

They also contended that the municipality breached the public's right not to be unfairly discriminated against with regard to culture and freedom of expression.

Certain actions taken by the council constituted an incitement of imminent violence and advocated hatred based on race and ethnicity, their legal team told the court.

The municipality had also failed to preserve the names constituting part of historical, cultural and linguistic heritage.

The court heard that the municipality had failed to research the history relevant to existing names or taking the history of names into consideration.

The case continues. - Sapa
