Millions rejoice for golden girl

THE ANC Women's League in Gauteng joins millions of South Africans in celebrating the achievement of our own Mokgadi Caster Semenya, who won gold at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin.

We cannot help but celebrate the outstanding achievement by this South African heroine.

It is so sad, though, that the prophets of doom are trying everything in their power to distract our focus from celebrating by raising baseless arguments about Caster's gender.

We know that her crime is that an African girl outran everybody to clinch the women's 800m final. This didn't go down well in some circles.

We vehemently oppose and condemn those who have made it their business to question the success of African women.

The subjection of Caster to this humiliating sex verification test is regrettable, and nothing more than sour grapes by people who don't think Africans can do better than they can.

Not only has this eroded the dignity of an 18-year-old girl, but that of African women in general.

In Africa mothers check their babies' gender when they are born and raise them accordingly, but some people tell us that it is not as simple as that.

We are quite sure that as many people as possible will give this South African heroine and all the the other athletes the welcome that they deserve when they land at OR Tambo International Airport.
