Mbali Zantsi and Noni Tenge top G-Sport awards

THE forefathers of South African boxing must have smiled in their graves when two female boxing personalities were honoured by G-Sport magazine.

The magazine, started by Kass Naidoo in 2006, was aimed at raising the profile of South African women in sport.

Naidoo is South Africa's first female cricket commentator.

Female boxing promoter Mbali "Don Queen" Zantsi, and WBF International welterweight champion Noni "She Bee Stingin" Tenge were honoured last week for their contribution to boxing. Zantsi won the Women's Sport of the Year award while Tenge was voted Female Star of the Year.

Zantsi, who has just given birth to a baby boy, said they achieved their feat after beating 12 other nominees from all sporting codes in their categories.

"It means there is something we are doing right. This was really big for boxing and it says a lot to sponsors," Zantsi said yesterday.

This comes when Mamali Promotions presents a first-ever four-female championship event at East London's Orient Theatre on Friday night. In that tournament female fighters Tenge and Unathi "Showtime" Myekeni will defend their WBF International welterweight and featherweight belts against Ghanaians Yinka Adeoti and Helen Joseph, respectively.

Meanwhile, Bomikazi Klaas and Queen Tshabalala will fight for the SA middleweight belt while Rita Mrwebi and Ester Mashiya will fight for the national super middleweight strap. Both titles are vacant.
