Mthembu, pictured, passed away yesterday at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital after a short illness.
Mthembu's widow Nhlanhla said he suddenly fell ill on Monday night. He was rushed to hospital where he died.
"We are totally devastated by my husband's sudden death," she said.
As an award-winning soccer journalist, Mthembu, 40, had established his name among the finest in the industry by the time he left Sowetan to work for Turning Point Media.
Before that, he was also a renowned athletics writer and had covered the sport's major events.
The funeral will take place on Saturday at the family home in Groblerpark, Roodepoort, on the West Rand, from 10am.
