We are no 1 in the world

SOUTH Africa are now the No 1-ranked side on the ICC Reliance Mobile world rankings in both Test cricket and the one-day format of the game.

SOUTH Africa are now the No 1-ranked side on the ICC Reliance Mobile world rankings in both Test cricket and the one-day format of the game.

That is the direct result of Australia's failure to win their Test series against England that finished at the Oval in London on Sunday with England achieving a 2-1 series victory.

Australia drop down to No 4 on the Test rankings with South Africa at No 1, followed by Sri Lanka and India.

South Africa's next Test series is against England at the end of the year.

They achieved the No 1 ranking in one-day international cricket earlier this year when they won seven out of 10 one-day games against Australia in the combined away and home series.

This is the first time that any country other than Australia has filled top spot in both formats of the game. It is the first time that Australia have lost the No 1 Test ranking since the current system was introduced in 2003.

"All credit to England for putting up a great performance to win the Ashes series against Australia," said Cricket South Africa president Gerald Majola.

"The Proteas now top both the ICC logs for Test and ODI cricket for the first time, which puts the seal on the best ever season for South African cricket.

"This is a fitting tribute to Graeme Smith and the Proteas, whose triumphs around the cricketing world have made all South Africans very proud indeed. The scene is now set for an epic duel when England tour South Africa later this year, which will surely push cricket's popularity to even greater heights." - Sapa
