MR PRICE runner Rene Kalmer notched up her fourth successive Spar Challenge win when she romped home in 34,41min to win the Pretoria race at the Tuks Rag Farm on Saturday afternoon.

"It was a nice race - I really enjoyed it," said Kalmer. "It's a new route and it's more user-friendly than the old route, which makes it faster.

"There were a few twists and turns and speed bumps, but they just made it more interesting.

"It's a bit different running a race in the afternoon," she said. "It's not like you get up and run. You have your breakfast, and then you have to plan everything very carefully, and make sure you have a snack before you run so that you have some fuel in the tank."

Kalmer said she and the University of Johannesburg's Phalula twins, Lebo and Lebogang, ran together for the first 4km.

"Then after 4km I got ahead of them and kept the lead for the rest of the race."

Lebo Phalula was second in 35,15, just one second ahead of her sister.

Zimbabwean Sharon Tshavenga (Nedbank) was fourth, in 35,15, followed by Poppy Mlambo, also of Nedbank, in 35,55. Last year's winner, Irvette van Blerk, could only manage seventh place. - Sapa
