Hail Semenyas

IT MUST be a great week to be a Semenya. On the same night South Africa was celebrating Caster Semenya's gold medal winning efforts at the IAAF meeting in Berlin, another of those who get their name from that village, just outside Polokwane, Caiphus "Katse" Semenya, celebrated his 70th birthday.

His fresh face and happy disposition belie the reality that this music icon has rocked South Africa and the world for well over half a century.

Now Caiphus is living his lifelong dream of starting an arts academy to help talented young artists fulfil their potential. He didn't even have to. His life story, of not allowing his environment, peers and circumstances to dictate what kind of artist he will be, is a library that holds many lessons for any aspiring young artist.

Thank you, Katse, may you see 70 more years.
