Filmed metro cops fired over hawkers bribes

FOUR of the five Metro police officers who fell into the trap of street hawkers in Soweto and got themselves filmed while taking bribes have been fired.

FOUR of the five Metro police officers who fell into the trap of street hawkers in Soweto and got themselves filmed while taking bribes have been fired.

The corrupt officers - were found guilty on Wednesday, almost a year after the probe began. They were yesterday served with dismissal letters.

They are Priscilla Mawela, Eunice Siyaba, Ludidi Nyangule and Tasana Nomlala. They were based in Soweto and were suspended for 90 days since the investigation.

When the 90 days expired, they were called back to work but transferred to Johannesburg while the investigation was still going on.

Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson Edna Mamonyane said the fifth officer was not included in the investigation.

"This is the supervisor who signed for a container that was confiscated but it later transpired it was not at the depot. He did not check it. He was charged with negligence. He was suspended for four days without pay," Mamonyane said.

Investigation into their conduct was instituted last October after three street vendors, plying their trade outside Jabulani Mall, captured the officers in camera while taking bribes.

The hawkers made arrangements with the officers to release their stock which had been confiscated during the raids in Soweto.

After paying the bribe, the hawkers collected their goods, which included a public phone container, disposable nappies, CDs and DVDs, through the back door.

Mamonyane said this was an indication that corruption had no place in the metro police.

Attempts to get comment from the hawkers were unsuccessful at the time of going to press yesterday.
