Wear the right one for the occasion

IF YOU are invited to a wedding, choose a nice fascinator or a little pill box with a veil. Such a hat will look just right for the occasion. But in case you want and should look extraordinary and unlike others, opt for a hat that is a real statement.

IF YOU are invited to a wedding, choose a nice fascinator or a little pill box with a veil. Such a hat will look just right for the occasion. But in case you want and should look extraordinary and unlike others, opt for a hat that is a real statement.

Wear your hat before the occasion

Treat your hat like a new pair of shoes. Wear it at home for some time to ensure it fits well and you feel comfortable in it. Check for possible problems. If you think it can be blown off, sew a comb in the back which can attach to your hair or use hair grips.

Choose how you will position your hat

Though there's no right or wrong way to wear a hat people consider it more appropriate to push their hat right to the back of the head. This isn't always the most flattering look.

That is why you need to experiment before the big day. Place your hat on in front of the mirror then move it around until you get the most attractive look.

Formal occasions

Particular formal occasions are suitable for hat wearing. Weddings, some sporting events such the Durban July, funerals, christenings, formal outdoor parties and times when you expect to greet someone of importance out of doors are the usual times when you may decide to wear a hat.

Hat style and face shape

Round or square face: Wear a straight, large brim, low crown, or fedora. Avoid rolled short brims and small hats.

Long face: Wear a flat crown, western hat, low crown, and hats with low wide brims.

Oval face: Wear any hat that catches your fancy.

A properly fitting hat should be no wider than your shoulders. If you have broad shoulders then you can wear a wide brimmed hat. Petite women should stick to hats with short brims.

Taller and plus-sized women can carry off a tall or wide brimmed hat.

Sizing: Consider how much hair you put under the hat and make sure there is enough room.
