Train safety under review

SHOSHOLOZA Meyl has introduced strict security measures to ensure the safety of passengers on its trains.

SHOSHOLOZA Meyl has introduced strict security measures to ensure the safety of passengers on its trains.

This follows the killing of Zimbabwean national Hope Mfumeri, who was travelling on the train from Gauteng to KwaZulu-Natal last week.

Mfumeri was shot dead while his wife and another passenger were seriously iwounded when Mvumeni Zulu went on a shooting spree.

It is alleged that Zulu was drunk when he started shooting.

He was arrested by police when the train reached Newcastle.

Shosholoza Meyl chief executive Viwe Mlenzana said they had reviewed safety measures on the train after this incident.

He said the company had a policy not to allow passengers to board the train with weapons.

"How the passenger boarded the train with a weapon is currently under investigation," Mlenzana said.

"We know that the suspect is a security guard and that his weapon was his licenced firearm."

Mlenzana said as part of reviewing their safety measures, they have formed a partnership with police.
