golden arrows in command

LAMONTVILLE Golden Arrows continued with their scintillating form when they beat PSL returnees Jomo Cosmos 2-0 in a lukewarm match at Chatsworth Stadium yesterday.

Abafana Bes'thende took full advantage of home turf as they attacked the visitors from the onset.

As early as the seventh minute of the match, Thamsanqa Gabuza nearly caught Avril Phali off-guard in the Cosmos goal with a long-range shot that went narrowly wide.

Three minutes later, Gabuza scored, only to be ruled offside by referee Faik Daniel.

Arrows, who were determined to collect maximum points, continued attacking Ezenkosi relentlessly, but failed to get an opener with their trusted striker Richard Henyekane not playing.

Cosmos should have scored in the 15th minute when Diarra Gasoussou laid on a beautiful cross for Thabiso Hlalele, but his header went narrowly wide.

Abafana Bes'thende went ahead in the 31st minute when Musa Bilankulu beat the offside trap to tap in from close range.

Two minutes later, Bilankulu completed his brace with a beautiful goal as he connected well with a pass from Gabuza. This was after a neat interchange of passes between silky Philani Shange, Thanduyise Khuboni and Gabuza.

The half-time score was 2-0 in favour of the home team.

The second half was much like the first, with Arrows playing the neat carpet football they are known for. Njabulo Manqana should have increased his team's tally when he received a neat pass from Shange inside the box, but his shot was deflected for a corner in the 53rd minute.

Cosmos thought they had earned a penalty when Gasoussou was fouled in the box, but Daniel waved play-on, much to the surprise of the fans. Club boss Jomo Sono brought on Larry Cohen, Gerald Modabi and Manuel Bucuane for Ousmane Berthe, Koena Mothapa and Josiah Mhlathe, but they failed to make an impact.
