Lucky them. "Spear" Sobopha graced the National Professional Soccer League briefly in 1977-78. He was the next best thing to Pirates kingpin Jomo Sono, a prince in waiting, when he transferred to Swallows.
But thugs struck next to his Mofolo, Soweto, home in 1978, leaving him blind and cutting short a budding career that had greatness written all over it.
Sobopha passed away after a short illness yesterday.
The thugs who attacked him are still at large, if they are alive.
It's a sad but timely reminder that crime has long robbed us and continues to rob us of some leading lights.
