MAPUTO - Mozambique is to chair the Southern African Development Community organ on politics, defence and security from September, a report said yesterday.

The daily Noticias reported that Mozambican deputy foreign affairs minister Henrique Banze said the country's candidacy for one of the regional body's strongest organs would be made at the next SADC troika meeting. Banze was speaking on the sidelines of the SADC day celebrations held in the central Chimoio town, north of Maputo.

At present Swaziland chairs the organ while Mozambique is deputy. - Sapa
